4.1 History of English Drama

1) Name any four periods of History of British Drama.
Answer:- The four periods of History of British Drama are:
i) Medieval period
ii) Renaissance period
iii) Restoration period
iv) Victorian period
 
2) List the four elements of drama.
Answer:- The four elements of drama are:- plot,    characters,    theme and stage directions.
 
3) State a type of drama each from any four periods of history.
Answer:- i) Medieval period:-   Robin Hood, Everyman
ii) Renaissance period:- Romeo and Juliet, Duchess of Malfi
iii) Restoration period:- All for Love, The Way of the World
iv) Victorian period:- The Importance of Being Earnest, A Doll's House
 
4) Compare the features of a comedy and tragedy.
Answer:-

i) A comedy deals with humorous story with a

    happy ending.

i) The tragedy deals with a serious or darker themes

    with sad ending.

ii) A comedy creates laughter and fun.

ii) A tragedy creates emotions of pity and fear.

iii) A comedy depends mostly on unusual

     circumstances and witty dialogues.

iii) In tragedy the main character mostly has a moral

     flaw that causes the tragic end.

iv) A Comedy uses humorous dialogues and

     situations to give relief.

iv) A tragedy evokes pity for the characters and

     teach moral lesson.


5) State the difference between poetry and drama.

i) Poetry is a verse or a poetic presentation

   for recitation.

i) Drama is normally in prose represented

   by actions and script.

ii) Poetry has stanzas. For musical effect most

    of the poetry has rhythm and rhyme.

ii) Drama has acts, scenes and dialogues.

iii) Poetry presents a word picture. There is

     use of poetic devices like figures of speech.

iii) Drama presents the story through

     performance, characterization and plot.

6) State the difference between drama and novel.

Novel

Drama tells a story through the performances, acts, scenes and dialogues.

A novel is written in a narrative form. It describes characters and actions. It is meant for reading and not for performance.


 7) Define drama.
Answer:- Drama is a composition in verse or prose to be acted on the stage. It tells a story through action, costume, setting and dialogue.
 
8) Explain the term plot.
Answer:- The plot is the series of events that take place during the play. It is the plan, scheme or pattern of the play. It has beginning, middle and an end.
 
9) Differentiate between characters and characterization.

Characters of a drama are the personalities performing actions to tell the story.

Characterization deals with the unique qualities that the dramatist bring in life.

 10) Enlist a few reasons for watching a drama live on the stage.

i) It gives real experience.
i) It gives joy and creates real atmosphere before the eyes of the audience.
 iii) It develops spectators' involvement in the events.
 iv) It presents concrete picture before the audience.

 11) Define the term - One Act Play

Answer:- A one act play is not exactly a shortened play. It is a complete story that has to be performed on the stage in stipulated time. It has its own features and characteristics. The action is confined to a single place and the number of characters is limited.
