Activity Sheet No.2
Headaches are a common complaint. According to
the World Health Organization, most people will experience a headache from time
to time. Headache is an almost universal human experience. While they can be
sometimes painful and debilitating, the majority can be treated with simple
painkillers and will go away within several hours. However, repeated attacks or
certain type of headache could be a sign of something more serious.
There are two main types of headaches: Primary and Secondary. Primary
headaches include tension type, migraine and cluster headaches. They are not
caused by other underlying medical problems. They are caused due to stress,
inadequate sleep and poor posture. Secondary headaches are caused by other
medical conditions such as infection or increased pressure in the skull due to
a tumor, head-injury, sinus or medication-overuse headaches.
For treating headaches, ice-packs are amongst the most effective
non-drug treatments. Apply it to the painful area; try placing it on the back
of the neck, forehead and temples. It gives relaxation and increase of
blood-flow. Rest or nap can give the brain an opportunity to get back to
normal. For secondary headaches medical treatment is essential.
